CROSSING the SOUTH CHINA SEA
APPROACHING CHU LAI, SOUTH VIETNAM

Division Headquarters in Vietnam for the Americal Division was based in the main part of Chu Lai.

Many of the buildings seen in this photo are part of the 91st Evacuation Hospital, which sat upon a cliff overlooking the South China Sea. The Combat Aviation Battalions, not visible in this picture (to left of photo) were situated on the outskirts of Chu Lai.

Vietnamese villagers kept their boats on the beach near the hospital. The guards let them pass through the barb wire to reach the beach so they could fish in the sea. At night, lights on the water could be spotted from the hospital.

There was a U.S.O. beach with lifeguards for the G. I.'s in this area. One of the Aviation Battalion Lab Technicians went surfing in the South China Sea. Some medics had snorkeling equipment sent to them from home, and one day they caught 2 lobsters, which they cooked for dinner.
